A lottery ticket that looked worthless nearly ended up in an Italian garbage dump — but it turned out to be worth €1 million.
The incredible story unfolded in Bitonto, southern Italy, after a woman tried to check her ticket at a store machine. The device showed an error saying the prize could not be paid there. Thinking the ticket had no value, she tossed it into the store’s trash.
But the ticket wasn’t a loser. The machine simply couldn’t process such a large prize for an ordinary retail payout.
A Desperate Search Begins
The woman later spoke with a relative and realized her numbers — 2, 4, 8, 10 and 51 — matched the winning draw. She rushed back to the store, only to learn that the trash had already been collected.
She then contacted local sanitation agency SANB, which launched an urgent search operation.
- Workers traced the garbage collection route.
- They located the truck that had picked up the trash.
- The vehicle was stopped and redirected for further processing.
Six Tons of Garbage, 48 Hours and One Winning Ticket
Because of safety rules, workers couldn’t simply dump the truck’s contents at the local depot. Instead, it was sent to a specialized waste facility near Bari.
For 48 hours, sanitation workers carefully searched through more than six tons of compacted waste.
Then came the breakthrough: an employee found the lottery ticket intact inside a torn garbage bag, surrounded by discarded receipts.
A Million-Euro Rescue
When SANB representative Roberto Nicola Toscano told the woman that her ticket had been recovered, she reportedly broke down in tears of relief.
She agreed to cover the utility’s logistical expenses and was ultimately able to claim the €1 million prize.
And the workers got a little lucky, too. After celebrating the recovery, several members of the crew pooled their spare change to buy a scratch-off ticket — and won €50.
What started as an ordinary trash collection turned into a remarkable million-euro rescue mission, proving just how valuable one tiny piece of paper can be.
